Adapted by Peter Nichols from his own play, this drama explores the extreme edges of black comedy. Alan Bates and Janet Suzman play Bri and Sheila, a Bristol couple who cope with the tragic predicament of their severely disabled daughter Jo (Elizabeth Robillard) by trying to make light of the situation, and even involving Jo in their jokes. But while Sheila clings to the distant hope that Jo's condition might improve, Bri wants to see her institutionalised and begins to entertain fantasies of euthanasia.
