In 1943, a Basque girl (Melissa Leo) defies her father (Francisco Rabal) and marries a G.I. (Timothy Hutton) on the eve of his departure for the front. In his attempt to stop them, her father is killed in a motor accident. Her brother (William Hurt) swears revenge and joins his brother-in-law's regiment in Italy, planning to kill him under cover of battle.
