Sumptuously-filmed, semi-autobiographical drama by Sicilian director Giuseppe Tornatore ('Cinema Paradiso'). The film follows three generations of men in Tornatore's picturesque hometown of Bagheria, known as 'Baaria' by its natives: Ciccio Torrenuova (Gaetano Aronica), his son Peppino (Francesco Scianna) and his grandson Pietro (Marco Iermano). In the 1930s, with Fascism taking hold across Italy, Ciccio is a humble shepherd who dedicates his solitude to books, poems and novels. Later, during the Second World War, his son Peppino belies his simple upbringing and lack of education by becoming a devoted Communist and local politician, and falls in love with local beauty Mannina (Margareth Made), with whom he goes on to have five children - including Pietro - despite the strong disapproval of her family.
