Parisian philosophy lecturer Martin (Charles Berling) is fascinated when he witnesses a fight between the painter Meyers (Robert Kramer) and his 17-year-old model Cécilia (Sophie Guillemin). Days later, after Meyers passes away while making love to Cécilia, Martin himself begins a highly-charged affair with the young woman. Both excited and frustrated by her immediacy and simplistic attitude towards life, Martin's growing obsession begins to unbalance him, and the affair becomes increasingly deranged and dangerous.

Cedric Kahn adapts Alberto Moravia's celebrated novel dealing with obsession and desire, in which a philosophy teacher (Charles Berling), recently separated from his far from discreet wife Sophie (Arielle Dombasle), begins an affair with a Lolita-esque nymphette called Cecilia (Sophie Guillemin). The girl was recently involved in an affair with an artist who died during lovemaking, and when the teacher discovers this titillating titbit, he is emotionally devastated, and finds his feelings divided. On the one hand, he loves his nubile young partner dearly and cannot bear to be parted from her; but on the other, he is consumed with jealousy that threatens to turn his love to hate.
