Hélène (Huppert) is the young, immoral mother of 17-year-old Pierre (Louis Garrel) who, when faced with her son's confusion about his emerging sexuality, decides to initiate him into an emotionally dangerous, incestuous game. Initially voyeuristic and controlling, eventually Hélène takes charge of Pierre's sexuality in a more direct manner, leading to a psychologically devastating conclusion.
