Synopsis:
Renowned Russian director Sergei Eisenstein began shooting this travelogue/social documentary in 1930 after an unsuccessful attempt to pursue his career in Hollywood. The planned three month shoot expanded to eleven, whereupon the project's backer, American author Upton Sinclair, withdrew his support. The existing footage was handed over to producer Sol Lesser, who fashioned from it the feature-length film 'Thunder Over Mexico' (1933) and two shorts. In 1939, Eisenstein's biographer, Marie Seaton, compiled the material in a manner more sympathetic to the director's original plans, for her feature 'Time in the Sun'. It was not until 1978, however, that Eisenstein's vision was faithfully adhered to, following a painstaking restoration, the version on show here, by his long-time associate Grigori Alexandrov.
