This was the first feature by documentary film maker Palcy, set in her native Martinique during the 1930s. Based on a novel originally banned by the French Colonial goverment, it follows the struggle of a young boy to educate himself and escape from the cane plantation ghetto in which he lives. Darling Legitimus won a Best Actress prize at Venice in 1983 for her portrayal of his grandmother.
