Jeanne de la Motte-Valois (Hilary Swank) is an artistocratic young woman who is made an orphan and has her family property stolen during the years running up to the French Revolution. Jeanne determines to repair the situation, but when her initial appeals to Marie Antoinette prove futile she opts for different tactics and begins learning the ways of the court from gigolo Retaux de Vilette (Simon Baker). Hearing about a 28,000 carat diamond necklace which is soon to go on the market, Jeanne realises this could be her chance to regain possession of her family's land, and begins hatching a plot to steal the precious object.
