Korean adaptation of Laclos' classic tale of romantic deception, set amongst the aristocracy of 18th century Korea. Lady Cho (Lee Mi-soo) sets a challenge for her cousin, Sir Cho-wan (Bae Yong-jun), daring him to seduce the young woman who is set to become her husband's concubine. If he is successful, Lady Cho is willing to give herself to her cousin as the prize, but if he fails, he will be condemned to spend the rest of his life as a monk. Sir Cho-wan agrees, but raises the stakes even higher by adding the famously virtuous Lady Sook (Jeon Do-yeon) to the proposed list of conquests. So begins a subtle and cynical game of seduction and deception, hidden behind the romantic conventions of the era.
