Profile of the P-47 Thunderbolt, nicknamed 'The Unbreakable' by those who flew it. Prototype Thunderbolts took to the skies in May 1941, with improved versions in action by mid-1943. These were followed by the P-47D, 9-47G and 9-47M, which could attain speeds of 470 mph. Eventually the XP-47J made it up to 504 mph, although this model never went into production; those that did partook in over 546,000 combat sorties over the course of World War Two.
