Kathy Bates gives a strong performance as the widowed mother of six who attempts to build the ideal home for her family in Idaho. Subjected to sexual harrassment and fired from her job at a chip factory, Frances Lacey returns home to find her eldest son has been caught stealing. Seeing no reason to stay, Frances packs up her kids and drives off in search of a new life. Eventually they find a home in a ramshackle old house with a lonely Asian man, Mr Moon. The kids attend the local school and Frances finds work at a bowling alley cafe. But Frances has trouble with a fellow male employee when he assumes that she's on for sex. Furthermore the house where they are staying burns down, the local community eventually rally round though and help build a new home for the Lacey family.
