Overweight teenager Haruyuki 'Haru' Arita (voice of Erik Scott Kimerer) often suffers at the hands of the bullies at Umesato Junior High School. As a form of escapism, he plays squash in the school's virtual network, earning the highest score and attracting the attention of popular girl Kuroyukihime (Kira Buckland). Through Kuroyukihime, Haru becomes involved in a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online fighting game called Brain Burst in which the human cognitive process is speeded up, giving the illusion that time has stopped. Together Haru and Kuroyukihime face many challenges as they try to discover the true purpose of the game.
