One of the early classics of post-Independence Indian cinema, directed by Mehboob Khan and dramatising the conflicts between traditional Indian values and the westernising influence of the departed British. Neeta (Nargis) is a multi-millionaire who is out riding one morning when she is injured after her horse throws her. Rescued by young farmer Dilip (Dilip Kumar), Neeta is grateful enough to give Dilip a position in her company once she inherits it from her father, but when Neeta prepares to marry her fiancé Rajan (Raj Kapoor), Dilip realises he is in love with her. Rashly he confesses his love for Neeta on the eve of her wedding day, and although she keeps this secret from Rajan, he soon begins to suspect. Rajan's actions will have tragic repercussions for all concerned.
