Milo (Ryan Phillippe) is an independent software designer working on ideas intended to create accord between different kinds of digital technology. When he receives an offer of work from visionary computer tycoon Gary Winston (Tim Robbins) it grates with his belief in public domain software, but nevertheless he finds the offer too much to resist, and is soon travelling out to Silicon Valley to take up the new position. Then, as he and his girlfriend Alice (Claire Forlani) try to settle into their new home, Milo begins to uncover the surprising truth about the way Winston does his business.
