Nelson Crowe (Laurence Fishburne) is a CIA agent that the company doesn't quite know what to do with. Convinced he was somehow involved in the disappearance of $50,000 of gold the agency decides to force him into taking a job for shadowy firm The Grimes Organisation - who specialise in blackmail and murder. Once installed in this new job Crowe starts working alongside Margaret Wells (Ellen Barkin) on the blackmailing of a Supreme Court judge, all the while reporting back to his CIA paymasters. But soon events lead Crowe into a plot against the organisation's boss Vic Grimes (Frank Langhella). As the film builds towards its explosive conclusion no-one can quite be sure who to trust.
