Documentary series which uses colour film footage (much of it exclusive to video) and extracts from letters and diaries to describe what life was like in wartime Britain. Events featured include a royal visit to Warrington, the Battle of Britain, Moseley's Blackshirts marching on the Embankment, British POWs being liberated in Burma, and the D-Day landings. Also included is the classic wartime documentary 'The Memphis Belle' (1943), directed by Hollywood legend William Wyler ('Roman Holiday', 'Ben Hur'). This DVD version includes exclusive footage not seen on television; John Thaw narrates.
