Overworked Hollywood director Alan Smithee (Eric Idle) has been engaged to film the blockbuster actioner 'Trio', and completes the movie on schedule. Although the studio are happy with the film Alan is not, so he steals the film cans and goes on the run. Soon agents, actors, studio heads and lawyers have all become entangled in the battle for film ownership, while Alan finds himself much sought after by various film-makers who want to put his name to their movies. Alan Smithee is the industry pseudonym for directors who want their name to be taken off a movie's credits, a move that disgruntled real-life director Arthur Hiller felt obliged to make for this film.
