Based in the oil-rich region of Niger Delta, the tribe has been fighting for independence since the 1960s in a country wracked by religious conflict and unrest tantamount to civil war. Many of the Ijaw people interviewed have suffered horrific repercussions of their struggle for recognition including rape, violence, kidnap and torture.
