Lafayette lives a bizarre life working at the New York Wax Museum and with an aggressive feminist theatre group. His friends are mostly outcasts or elderly with at least one manic depressive among them. One day, as the city is struggling to contain a plague of rats, Lafayette and his depressed friend walk to a beach beside the Hudson river where they discover a dead forty foot ape, cradling a newly-born chimpanzee in its arms. Lafayette adopts the monkey and gradually becomes less and less human as his attachment to the chimp grows. Meanwhile the museum owner warns of the impending collapse of society and starts trying to organise an apocalypse of his own.
