In 1955 Southern Florida, decorated Korean War veteran Emmet Foley (Gary Oldman) suffers a breakdown and tries to kill himself. He is confined to Chattahoochee, a crumbling, backward state mental hospital. There he befriends a fellow patient (Dennis Hopper), gradually regains his self respect, and attempts to expose the horrific conditions and cruel treatment of patients.
