Loretta Young and Alan Ladd star in this 1940s war drama directed by John Farrow. Set during World War II in Japanese-occupied China, the film follows US oil salesman David Jones (Ladd) and his business partner Johnny Sparrow (William Bendix) as they drive to Shanghai. On the way they meet American teacher Carolyn Grant (Young) who joins them on the road, along with her Chinese students. At first, Jones is indifferent to the plight of the Chinese and is only concerned with securing the best price for his supplies. However, over the course of the journey he begins to realise the brutality they have suffered at the hands of the Japanese. While an attraction develops between him and Carolyn, Jones joins a group of Chinese guerrillas and puts his life at risk to help them defeat the Japanese.
