1952 film-noir starring Barbara Stanwyck and Marilyn Monroe in one of her early roles. Mae Doyle (Stanwyck) returns to her hometown to live with her brother, Joe (Keith Andes), after being disappointed by love and life in New York. As Mae recovers from this setback, she starts to date fisherman Jerry (Paul Douglas), while Joe embarks on a relationship with factory worker Peggy (Monroe). Mae marries Jerry and they have a baby together but Mae soon develops feelings for Jerry's friend, Earl (Robert Ryan). The consequences that follow teach Mae some valuable lessons about life and happiness.
