Based on the Broadway play by William Inge, this subtle study of an unhappy marriage stars Burt Lancaster as Doc Delaney, a recovered alcoholic who blames his wife for forcing him into a 'shotgun' wedding years before, putting an end to his dreams and ambitions. Meanwhile, his wife Lola (Shirley Booth in an Oscar-winning performance) is frustrated by her inability to have children, and still mourns the loss of her dog, Sheba, who ran away several months before the vents in the film unfold. When pretty, vivacious young student, Marie (Terry Moore) rents a room in the Delaney's house, the long-repressed desires and hopes of the couple begin to surface: Doc finds buried passions rekindled - and his ongoing struggle to stay away from the bottle becomes increasingly difficult, while Lola - unaware of her husband's feelings for Marie - acts out her maternal instincts towards the girl.

Contains mild sexual innuendo and a single scene of moderate threat
