Rafael Salinas (Chayanne) flees his home in Cuba and heads for the glamour and riches of America. He finds himself in Texas, where his long-lost father John owns a dance school. Unaware that Rafael is his son, John gives the boy a job as a repair-man. Rafael is a fantastic dancer, but his style is too passionate and radical for the school and he must watch from the sidelines. He observes Ruby (Vanessa Williams), a technically brilliant, but emotionally sterile dancer, and decides he must inject his own latin flair and rhythm into the proceedings. When one of the dancers falls ill, Rafael senses he has a chance to succeed.
