As he writes a letter of complaint to a vending machine company that took his money without giving him his chosen snack, he finds an outlet for his anger in the written word, describing in his letters everything that is wrong with his life. When customer service rep Karen Moreno (Naomi Watts) takes an interest in the disgruntled customer and arranges to meet him as a shoulder to cry on, the pair develop an unusual friendship, and her advice on how to move on sees Davis demolish the life that has been holding him back.
