Sergei Bondarchuk's debut feature tells the story of an ordinary Russian man and his determination to protect his country from Nazi invasion in WWII. Based on the novel by Nobel-winning author Mikhail Sholokov, the film follows Andrei Sokolov (played by Sergei Bondarchuk himself) as he is taken captive by Nazi invaders and sent to a concentration camp, where he is subjected to merciless degradation and depravity. Dreams of reuniting with his family keep a flame burning in his heart throughout - but when, upon his liberation from the camp, he learns that they have all perished, he signs up and marches with the mighty Soviet Army towards Berlin...
