Triple bill of thrillers. In 'Devil's Advocate' (1997), hotshot defence attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) seems to have landed on his feet when he is poached by an international law firm in New York. Lomax is welcomed by the charismatic John Milton (Al Pacino), who seems to take an especially close interest in his young employee's career. Meanwhile, Lomax's wife Mary-Ann (Charlize Theron) suffers a breakdown, believing that she is losing her husband to a dark and powerful force. In 'Dreamcatcher' (2003), four young schoolfriends help prevent a handicapped boy from being beaten up by bullies and, in return, they are endowed with special powers. The four remain friends into adulthood and meet up once a year for a reunion at a hunting lodge in the Maine woods. However, this year strange things begin to happen when a disorientated hunter wanders into the cabin, and the friends discover that his body has been taken over by a killer-wormlike creature, leaving only one of the friends, Henry (Thomas James) alive. It soon transpires that this is the beginning of a deadly alien invasion which leads to the intervention of the army, led by Colonel Curtis (Morgan Freeman). However, Curtis needs to enlist the help of Henry, who is able to communicate with one of his dead friends... In 'Murder By Numbers' (2002), homicide detectives Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) and Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin) are called in to investigate a murder - and soon find clues that point to school caretaker Ray (Chris Penn). Cassie then goes to Ray's house to look for further clues, but is violently attacked by his pet baboon and hospitalised. Upon her recovery, Cassie discovers that the case has been closed and that Ray is now dead, apparently having committed suicide. Nevertheless, despite what her colleagues say, Cassie is convinced that justice has not been done, and resolves to get to the bottom of the matter.
