Volker Schlöndorff directs this historical drama set in the latter stages of the Second World War in occupied Paris. On Adolf Hitler's orders, General Dietrich von Choltitz (Niels Arestrup) is due to destroy many of the city's famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Notre-Dame Cathedral. However, before the plans go ahead, on August 24th 1944 - the day before the Liberation of Paris - Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling (André Dussollier) enters the general's office in the Hotel Meurice through a secret passageway and challenges him, stalling for time so the Allied forces can save the city.
