Jeff Calhoun directs this live performance of the Broadway musical at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, California. Original Broadway stars Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay, Ben Fankhauser and Andrew Keenan-Bolger reprise their roles as Jack, Katherine, Davey and Crutchie in this musical tale inspired by the 1899 Newsboys Strike in New York City. Newspaper delivery boy Jack Kelly lives and works alongside his fellow newsies but dreams of leaving the city for Santa Fe. When the publishers raise the price of their papers, Jack tries to organise a protest while Davey steps in and readies a full-scale strike. Their actions are quickly and brutally shut down by the police but their efforts make them front-page news. This gives the newsies the encouragement they need to take winning action against the newspaper bosses but Jack remains uncertain about how to deal with his boss Joseph Pulitzer (Steve Blanchard) when he offers him an alternative way out.
