Don Carlos, Infante of Spain, is betrothed to Elisabeth until his father intercedes and marries her instead. Carlos, heartbroken, enters a monastery, but his friend Rodrigue tries to rally his spirits by convincing him to help free Protestant Flanders from Catholic Spain. Meanwhile Princess Eboli plots to have Carlos for herself, in spite of his continuing love for Elisabeth. Recorded live at La Scala, Milan, in 1992, this performance saw Luciano Pavarotti's first appearance in the title role, while Samuel Ramey played Filippo II. The lavish production and sets were by Franco Zeffirelli and the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro alla Scala was conducted by Riccardo Mutti. Other singers included Paolo Coni, Alexander Anisimov, Andrea Silvestrelli and Daniela Dessi.
