The second film in the trilogy from director Deepa Mehta which began with 'Fire' (1996) and concludes with 'Water' (2001). Set against the 1947 division of India into separate Hindu and Islamic states, it tells the story of Shanta (Nandita Das), a Hindu living in the soon-to-be-Islamic city of Lahore, and her relationship with her suitor Hasan (Rahul Khanna), a Muslim who proposes to leave the city with her and convert to Hinduism. The two become lovers, but they are watched closely by Hasan's jealous rival Dil Nawaz (Aamir Kahn).
