Evocative drama based on the autobiographical book by Nicholas Gage about events that unfolded during the Greek Civil War in the 1940s. John Malkovich stars as Gage, a New York Times journalist assigned to a post on the Greek/Albanian border. For him this is a poignant return to the homeland where he spent his boyhood before Communist guerillas stormed the small village where he lived with his family, and executed his mother, Eleni (Kate Nelligan) when she attempted to smuggle her children out of the wartorn country. The story of Gage's past unfolds in a series of haunting flashbacks, while back in the present the adult Nick tracks down those responsible for his mother's death. But when, in a murderous and vengeful frame of mind, he eventually confronts the man who signed Eleni's death warrant, the experience proves to be very different from his expectations - and represents something of an epiphany.
