When an anonymous man violently hijacks a bus in a small Japanese town, the only three survivors are the driver Makoto (Koji Yakusho) and a young brother and sister, Kozue and Naoki Tamura (Aoi and Masaru Miyazaki). Two years later, all three are still suffering from the trauma of the incident, and when he learns that the Tamura children are now living alone, Makoto moves in with them and begins acting as their surrogate parent. Eventually the three acquire an old bus and, along with cousin Akihiko (Yohichiroh Saitoh), they embark upon a long aimless journey across Japan in an attempt to find some inner peace.
