Synopsis

Joshua Logan directs this romantic drama adapted from the 1954 stage musical which was based on Marcel Pagnol's 'Marseilles Trilogy'. Set in Marseilles in the 1920s, the film follows 18-year-old Fanny (Leslie Caron), a fish salesgirl who has long been in love with Marius (Horst Buchholz), the son of local bar owner César (Charles Boyer). Despite having mutual feelings for Fanny, Marius dreams of a life at sea and repeatedly rejects her advances. When Fanny becomes engaged to wealthy gentlemen Panisse (Maurice Chevalier), who is several years her senior, Marius signs up for a five-year sailing expedition, but before he leaves he finally gives in to his feelings and shares a passionate night with the woman he loves. After his departure, Fanny discovers she is pregnant and decides to go ahead with her marriage to Panisse for the sake of her child. Will the young lovers be separated forever?
