American stand-up comedian Tommy Fawkes (Oliver Platt) has always lived in the shadow of his famous father, undisputed 'King of Comedy' George Fawkes (Jerry Lewis). After bombing in Las Vegas, Tommy travels to his childhood home - Blackpool, England - in search of his roots and some new material. He meets troubled-but-brilliant comic performer Jack Parker (Lee Evans), whose father and uncle were once famous clowns who performed on the same bill as his father. Tommy is shocked to discover that not only did George steal his best routines from Jack's family, but Jack is also his half-brother from an affair George conducted with Jack's mother, Katie (Leslie Caron).
