Germinal Film Poster

Based on Zola's epic mother of all mining disaster/trade union strike novels, this was allegedly the most expensive French production ever from the director of 'Jean de Florette' and 'Manon des Sources', Claude Berri, with Gerard Depardieu as the miner Maheu. Set in the coal mines of Northern France during the Second Napoleonic Empire, 'Germinal' depicts the events leading up to a disastrous and drawn out strike with Renaud as Etienne Lantier, the unemployed itinerant who is drawn into the heat and toil of the mines.
