For nine-year-old twins, Lukas and Elias, summer isn’t shaping up to be quite as idyllic as the ones that came before. As well as having to contend with the upheaval of moving to a lonely countryside home surrounded by nothing but woods and cornfields, their mother returns from cosmetic surgery with her entire face covered in bandages and an entirely distant persona. Cold, detached, and at times downright creepy, it’s not long before they begin to question whether the woman in their new home is even their mother, and the pair embark on a mission to uncover the truth. This skin-crawling psychological horror film is not for the faint-hearted, and is expertly written and directed by Severin Fiala (The End of Walnut Grove) and Veronika Franz (Paradise: Love). Goodnight Mommy was selected as the Austrian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2016 Academy Awards, but sadly was not nominated. However, this hasn’t stopped critics from heaping praise upon the film: Variety – "Thoroughly unnerving." Twitch – ‘’Gets under your skin early and stays there.’’ The Guardian – ‘’Every minute that goes by ratchets up the unease.’’
