Director David Merrill (Robert De Niro) is hot property in Hollywood until the McCarthy hearings begin and he refuses to co-operate with the 'House of Un-American Activities Committee'. He finds himself blacklisted, as a paranoid Hollywood refuses to employ him and shuns him, both socially and professionally. Martin Scorsese appears as a character based on Joseph Losey, the director who fled to Europe during this era of Cold War paranoia.
