Synopsis

A Kate Winslet double bill. In 'Holy Smoke' the well-intentioned family of Ruth Barron (Kate Winslet), a young middle-class Australian who has joined a cult in India, call upon exit counsellor P.J. Waters (Harvey Keitel) for help in getting her back. Waters is convinced that the job will take no longer than three days of intense counselling in the outback, yet he soon finds himself falling for his client, who uses her sexuality to reverse the counsellor/client relationship and claim some power for herself. 'Hideous Kinky' tells the story of a single-mother, Julia (Kate Winslet), who decides to flee drab, early 1970s London with her two daughters and start life afresh in Morocco. For the two girls, Bea (Bella Riza) and Lucy (Carrie Mullen), the streets of Marrakech offer freedom and excitement, but the city is more daunting for the penniless Julia. However, Julia's life is drastically improved when she meets Bilal (Said Taghmaoui), a feckless acrobat who charms the whole family. As she grows closer to Bilal, Julia is forced to examine the reasons why she fled England, and ponder the nature of love and responsibility.
