Synopsis

George C. Scott stars as washed-up writer Thomas Hudson in this adaptation of the unfinished novel by Ernest Hemingway. Having retreated to an island in the Bahamas, Hudson leads a settled life of drinking and fishing, until he is unexpectedly visited by his sons. Tom (Hart Bochner), Hudson's eldest boy, manages to bond with his father, but the family reunion is cut short by the outbreak of the Second World War. Tom impulsively leaves to enlist in the RAF so that he can fight the Germans, and when Hudson learns that he has been killed in action he decides to take a stand of his own, and secretly begins preparations to smuggle Jewish refugees onto his island.
