A good cup of caffè, balmy climes, and Claudia Cardinale are all reasons that Luca is listing to convince boyfriend Gustav that they should still wave their tricolore on home soil. But with their dearest friends seeking greener pastures elsewhere in the world, the couple are torn about what to do: Gustav wants out while Luca's intent on staying. As Italy faces a serious brain-drain, Luca takes a reluctant Gustav on a six-month trip around the peninsula to reconsider the faded giants (Bialetti or bust!), their heritage, and their fellow country people. So, the chosen automobile on this all-important tour? A rumbly old-school number, the Fiat 500, which curiously changes colour throughout the film. Sure enough, our award-winning filmmaking couple (Suddenly Last Winter) meet a whole host of animated characters only too happy to offer their two cents on what they think of la bella Italia.
