During the dark days of the Nazi occupation of Poland, Jewish café owner Jakob (Robin Williams) overhears news of a Soviet advance against the German forces. He informs his friends of this and immediately sees their spirits rise, but as the news spreads so does a rumour that Jakob must have a radio, an offence which is punishable by death. When he sees the hope that the news has brought to the ghetto, Jakob puts his own life in danger by spreading rumours of further broadcasts.
