Synopsis

A triple bill of historical dramas. In 'Joan of Arc', tormented by visions, young Joan (Milla Jovovich) leaves her country home, seeks out the heir to the French throne, and tells him that God has charged her with the task of freeing France from the English. Granted an army, Joan fulfils her promise, but is later betrayed and tried as a witch. 'Glory' is set during the American Civil War. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), a white northern officer, is given the unpopular job of leading the first all-black unit: the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts. The company, which includes Emerson scholar Searles (Andre Braugher), gravedigger Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and runaway slave Trip (Denzel Washington), are treated as inferiors by the white enlistees and other officers. When the unit is offered less than standard pay, Shaw supports them in their refusal to accept on principal. The 54th go on to prove themselves in the field of battle, making a suicidal attempt to penetrate Fort Wagner in South Carolina. Whilst 'The Patriot', is set in South Carolina, 1776. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a plantation owner and ex-soldier, refuses to join his countrymen in the battle for American Independence. However, when one of his sons is killed and another is wounded, Benjamin is forced to enter the fray in order to protect those he loves. He is given a command by his old friend Colonel Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper) and begins to mount a campaign against the notorious British officer William Tavington (Jason Isaacs).
