The true story of Robert Flaherty's expedition to the Arctic Circle in 1920 to film the first recorded footage of the Eskimos in their natural environment. He struggles against the elements, polar bears, and the superstition of the Eskimos themselves, wary of his 'glass eyed box', to forge a bond with Nanook the Eskimo and produce the film 'Nanook of the North'.
