Director Raoul Ruiz's portrait of the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt (John Malkovich), whose lavish, decorative paintings were closely associated with the art nouveau style of the late 19th century. The film charts his life in recollections from his death-bed, travelling back to his appearance at the 1900 world exhibition in Paris, where he won the gold medal for his work 'Philosophy'.
