Claude Chabrol's directorial debut has also been credited as the first effort to emerge from the French New Wave. François (Stéphane Audran) returns to his hometown from the big city to find that his old friends have settled into depressing routines. Serge (Gérard Blain), for instance, is stuck in a loveless marriage and has hit the bottle in response. François determines to help him turn his life around, despite warnings that his involvement may do more harm than good.
