Synopsis

Victor Hugo's classic tale of a 19th-century French ex-convict (Michael Rennie) and his hounding by a vengeful police inspector (Robert Newton). When Jean Valjean is sentenced to 10 years hard labour for stealing a loaf of bread, little does he realise how grim vicious Inspector Javert (Newton) is going to make life for him. A finely crafted drama - the fifth big screen adaptation of the story - boasting a nicely-played cameo from Edmund Gwenn as the bishop who gives Valjean and early lesson in humility and honesty.
