Synopsis

Towards the end of his career, Vertov was commissioned to make this hybrid documentary celebrating the Soviet Union and motherhood. The film shows the state’s protection of mothers and children, and the network of maternity homes, nurseries, and kindergartens that had been promised in Stalin’s Constitution of 1936. The film includes some 600 shots of women of all ages, nationalities and classes, symbolising Women and Motherhood. The subject of all their embraces and lavish affection is one Joseph Stalin. Yet the adulation proved too much even for Stalin, and the film was long shelved.
