Marlene Film Poster

Documentary film about the German-born American actress and singer, directed by Maximilian Schell. After many years spent in solitutde in her Paris apartment, Marlene finally agreed to participate in the film on the condition that she would not appear onscreen. Schell overcomes this by carefully fusing a selection of audio interviews with excerpts of Marlene's performances and the dilemmas he faced whilst making the documentary to unique effect, revealing her mysterious nature for what it really is: cantankerous, terse, challenging, fascinating and, at times, surprisingly forthcoming and meaningful.
