Documentary following the work of artist Mark Hogancamp. In the wake of a vicious attack by five men outside a bar in New York, Mark wakes up in hospital after a nine day coma with little recollection of his life. Unable to afford therapy or treatment and having lost the ability to write and draw, he seeks solace and an artistic outlet in miniature figurines. His new interest leads him to build a full 1/6th scale version of a World War II-era Belgian town named Marwencol in his back garden, complete with characters and storylines reflecting those around him. But when his photos of Marwencol are published and attract the attention of New York art galleries, Mark has to overcome opening up his new created world to the one he left behind.
